Will AI make university degrees less valuable?
Universities are being judged against a new benchmark: whether graduates can perform in workplaces where AI is ever-present. When tasks once reserved for degree holders are partly automated, the degree’s role as a signal of capability, judgement, and readiness is questioned. The risk is not only reputational. It is a shift in what society believes a degree is for.
Executive summary AI is challenging a long-standing assumption: that a degree reliably signals scarce capability. As AI lowers the cost of producing outputs, attention shifts to judgement, accountability, and the conditions under which knowledge claims can be trusted. Some futures point to credential erosion, others to renewal through redesigned assessment and stronger links to real performance. The open question is whether institutions can evidence what graduates can do, not only what they studied.
